Is it possible for people of the opposite sex to be best friends?

It is possible for people of the opposite sex to be best friends. However, it is not very advisable because of the emotional attachment that ensues from such relationships. Two people of the opposite sex who see each other alone often, spend lots of time together or even pray together have been proven to develop emotional attachment over time. This kind of attachment has been known to cloud the leading of the Spirit in the souls of those involved – and if not checked, can result in sexual sins. It is therefore better to have friends of the same sex – someone who knows all there is to know about you, than having a bosom friend of the opposite sex. This is important for emotional and psychological balance.

For those who are married, however, or preparing for marriage, it is very important that your spouse becomes your best friend.
